Romantic City Break Portrait Photography: Dirty Weekend in Amsterdam

Posted on January 28, 2012

If you’re thinking of hiring a portrait photographer to create lifestyle or art portraiture for your home, you may like to consider combining your photo-shoot with a romantic city break.

The timing of this photoshoot was almost perfect as I was able to combine it with a city break with my girlfriend to celebrate my birthday. However, the title of the post refers to a less fortunate aspect to the timing of the trip. When we arrived the normally beautiful city of Amsterdam was blighted by mountains of rotting refuse sacks with excess litter swirling around in the winds. In the early hours Dam square was almost like a scene from an apocalyptic movie. We soon discovered the temporary cause was a prolonged strike by the city’s refuse collection services.

On the first morning of my trip, I met up with Damien and the couple for the photoshoot (Bas and Samantha). It was a cool 12 degrees and overcast all day, so we opted to use lightweight photographic lighting most of the time. Below is a selection of my images from the shoot.

One of the things that caught my eye whilst walking around Amsterdam was the interesting street graffiti:

Here’s a fun graffiti shot I grabbed after the shoot on the way to the restaurant:

and our final destination for the day, the Sea Palace (a floating Chinese restaurant):

Whilst in Amsterdam, I enjoyed a comfortable stay at the Hotel Pulitzer (a boutique hotel). The hotel is a block of 25 restored 17th/18th century canal houses that have been converted into a luxurious 5 star hotel. I would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a central location in the heart of Amsterdam. This was a lucky find as I only paid budget rates using a ‘Top Secret Hotel’ deal on lastminute.com. The Top Secret deals can offer massive discounts, but the catch is that the name of the hotel isn’t revealed until after you’ve booked. Lastminute provide the location, star rating, and description of amenities before booking, but with a little detective work you can often deduce which hotel it is before you book ;).
