‘What is the difference between Editorial Fashion Photography and Advertising/Commercial Fashion Photography?’ Images from a photo-shoot with FHM Honey Lisa-Marie.
What is the difference between Editorial Fashion Photography and Advertising/Commercial Fashion Photography?
Advertising/Commercial Fashion Photography
The purpose of Advertising/Commercial Fashion Photography is to sell a product or brand. An advertising/commercial photo-shoot is usually focussed on creating a selection of images from a narrow brief, from which only one is likely to be used. These images are often reproduced as single image adverts in magazines, billboards or brand web-sites. Advertising often looks cleaner and tends to be shot with studio style photographic lighting to highlight the clothing or make-up and beauty products. Advertising is often about selling an image of a lifestyle to attract consumers to buy into their brands for lifestyles that they aspire to live. Advertising images can focus solely on the product or may also include non-products in the scene such as luxury cars or luxury living spaces that sell the lifestyle. The photo-shoot is funded by the brand.
Editorial Fashion Photography
Editorial Fashion Photography is predominantly destined for features and articles in printed or online magazines, books, and newspapers. Editorial sells more of the mood. The end product is usually a series of images, that when combined are able to loosely tell a story, or captivate the viewer through imagery with impact or intrigue. Sometimes the location relates closely to the situation the clothing would be worn in, but conversely an out of context location can be used to juxtapose the clothing to provide contrast. There are generally less rules in editorial fashion photography, and photographers may have more creative freedom. An editorial photo-shoot might be funded (or part-funded) by the magazine rather than the brand.
Editorial Style Photo-shoot with FHM Honey Lisa Marie
This isn’t a recent photo-shoot, but one that I haven’t shared before, so I decided that the editorial fashion style topic would be a good opportunity to do so. This photo-shoot was an informal shoot following a dinner party hosted by Chris Hanley, with Damien Lovegrove, a few other fellow photographers I’d met whilst in Italy, and FHM Honey Lisa-Marie.
Chris is not only a top portrait and wedding photographer, but he is also a master of creativity in the kitchen too. Chris has been a contestant on Masterchef twice, and his food certainly equalled or bettered anything I’d eaten at a top restaurant. After the social event, the following morning Lisa-Marie joined us at Chris’ studio for a brief informal shoot before we all headed home. We utilised an empty industrial space above the studio, testing our abilities to shoot hand-held in the low-light of Winter with a slight hangover.
Below are a selection of images from the shoot. Feel free to leave comments at the end.
